About this artist:

Greg Neeley lives in Colorado state in the USA.  He sculpted this mermaid for Comstock Creations, a pewter giftware and figurine manufacturing company formerly located in the American Southwest. He's gone onto bigger projects now, but when he sculpted this little sea diva many years ago he probably never dreamed his sculpt could be cleverly interpreted by miniature painting artists in so many imaginative ways.

In 2006, I asked a few friends of mine to take the sculpt, which had certain challenges, and paint it. The mermaid is affixed to the amethyst and can't be removed, but I said they couldn't paint over the amethyst.  How would they prime the figure?  And how would they paint the mermaid without getting paint on the gem?  Also, there was the crystal globe in the mermaid's hand.  Hmmm? What to do about that?  Finally, there were the poor little mermaid's facial features. When she was crafted, I'm confident it wasn't contemplated she would be painted and accordingly need some 'touch up'.

I mysteriously told them, "Don't try to create a Golden Demon winning entry, but try to 'think outside the box'."  And being somewhat naughty, I didn't tell them I had other friends painting the same sculpt.  "It's a secret project," I explained.  (Although I know a few of them did figure out 'the secret' not too far afterwards.)

So the glorious results appear above.  Just click the thumbnail photos to see larger pictures. Not only did my artists paint the mermaid, many of them also did facial resculpting, devised tattoos and interesting skin blends, created amazing bases, and arrived at color combinations that are dazzling.

My thanks to all the artists who indulged me on this project and cheerfully and diligently tackled this challenging sculpt, at the same time skillfully demonstrating how to 'think outside the box'.
